Remember how much fun you had as a child, trick-or-treating each Halloween? Perhaps now you’re the parent taking your child out for their first trip and wondering what to expect. While keeping their diet balanced on a sweet holiday can be a challenge, here’s 8 parent-approved ideas to make the most of this year’s festivities:
Clementine Pumpkins: clementines + green pepper
These pumpkins are a great way to get kids excited about the fruit and vegetables in their lunch. Peel clementines and wash and cut green pepper into 2-inch-long sticks. Place one pepper stick into the center of each clementine and stow finished pumpkin in a lunchbox for a little lunchtime surprise.
Apple Mouths: apple + peanut butter + sliced almonds
Apple mouths are not only frighteningly real-looking, but also shockingly tasty! Serve these as an afterschool snack and you’ll have kids shrieking with delight. Wash and cut one apple into ½-inch slices. Slather 1-2 teaspoons of peanut butter on one side of each apple slice and sandwich two slices together to form a mouth. For the teeth, cut sliced almonds in half and carefully press each “tooth” into the peanut butter-filled mouth.
Veggie Eyeballs: zucchini + pasta sauce + shredded cheese + olive slices
These vegetable-packed pizzas make the perfect snack for your kid’s Halloween party. Wash and slice zucchini into ½-inch pieces. Top each zucchini slice with a spoonful of pasta sauce, shredded cheese, and one olive slice. Microwave for 15-20 seconds, or until cheese begins to melt.
Banana Ghosts: banana + mini chocolate chips + dried cranberries
Banana ghosts are so simple to make that kids will love creating their own. Peel and cut a small banana in half. Push the pointed end of two mini chocolate chips into each banana half to make the eyes, and press one piece of dried cranberry below to create a mouth. Serve as a hauntingly fun after-dinner treat.
Trick-or-treating is, of course, the highlight of a kid’s Halloween. Here are four simple tips for a smart trick-or-treating experience this year:
Eat Before. Have kids eat a nutritious dinner before they go out trick-or-treating. With full stomachs, kids will be less likely to snack on their treats as they travel from house to house.
Down-Size the Bucket: Choosing a smaller trick-or-treat bucket will control the amount your kids can collect. Always opt for a reasonably-portioned bucket, rather than a hold-all pillowcase.
Walk it Off: Leave the car at home and choose to walk to your trick-or-treating destinations. Walking not only provides exercise, it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors.
Offer Non-Treats: Halloween treats don’t have to be food-items. Choose an assortment of prize items to hand out. Pencils, crayons, stickers, bouncy balls, and temporary tattoos are all fun options for kids.
Bring along Honest Kids Pouches: All that walking (and snacking) is bound to make the whole family thirsty! Bring along a carton of your favorite Honest Kids to share with friends and neighbors!

After 16 years of continuous growth for our glass bottled teas, we had lots of internal debates about whether we should try to update the line. Even though our beverages are the top-selling bottled tea line in the natural foods channel, we took a deep breath, and decided to challenge ourselves on the ingredients, the label art, and even the impact of the mission.
So consider this your invite to joining us in celebrating a major milestone by transitioning organic sugar in the sweetened teas over to Fair Trade Certified™ organic sugar. It’s a big step in terms of furthering the Honest Tea mission, and the Fair Trade Certified logo now reflects the use of both tea & sugar ingredients in your favorite glass bottled tea. We’ve also joined 1% for the Planet, committing to donate the equivalent of at least one percent of sales from our tea line in 16 oz. glass bottles to organizations within the 1% For the Planet network.
You’ll also notice our “refreshed” look. The answer came in the form of art—specifically, the realism that springs to life in oil paintings. Our design team collaborated with a creative oil painter who understood both our excitement and hesitations in making this project a reality. She was tasked with the challenge of artfully communicating our principles—honesty, transparency, whimsy, and ingredients you can feel good about—from concept to reality
Using images of artwork we have around our office from past trips to the tea gardens, the oil painter brought to life the personality of each tea according to its origin and unique story. Each painting was then translated from paint, to canvas, to bottle by our talented in-house graphics team, making sure the final result stayed true to our roots. The new images are centered in the middle of our iconic “T” shape, so you’ll still be able to recognize Honest beverages on store shelves.

‘Tis the season of delicious produce. This time of year, grocery stores and farmers markets are filled with mountains of fresh fruit and piles of vibrant vegetables. In the midst of such abundance it’s hard to resist buying it all. But without proper care, your everyday purchases can easily turn to waste. According to the USDA, an estimated 30-40%* of food produced in this country ends up in the trash. That is an incredible amount of money and natural resources that literally end up at the dump.
At Honest Tea, we do our best to reduce waste, whether it is with our ingredients or our packaging. Fun fact: after our tea leaves are brewed, they are sent to local farms to be utilized for compost. We want to help you do the same at home. Here are a few tips on how you can savor taste and eliminate waste this season and all year round.
Plan It: Although impulse buys can be fun, these are the purchases that most frequently end up in the trash. Before shopping, plan out the meals you want to prepare and make a list of the exact ingredients needed. As you’re shopping, stick to the list so that you buy only the ingredients you will use.
Maximize It: You may not be aware of exactly how much of a food you can use. For example, celery leaves can be used as a garnish for soups and salads, beet tops can become sautéed greens for a side dish, and meat bones can be boiled to add flavor to soup stock. Use each ingredient to its full flavor potential!
Grow It: Even kitchen scraps that seem to have no function have great potential. After using the tops, the roots of celery and romaine lettuce can be placed in a glass of water, potted, and regrown. Garlic cloves, ginger root, and even aging potatoes need only to be placed in some soil and will form new shoots in no time at all. Just one ingredient can create a garden’s worth of produce.
Compost It: For those last bits of food that can’t be eaten or grown, compost is the way to go. Compost is decayed organic material that is used as a fertilizer to harvest new plant life. You can compost everything from vegetable peels and coffee grounds to egg shells and paper towels! Check out more about the basics and benefits of composting here.
Freeze It: If you find yourself with extra ingredients even after the meal is complete, freezing is your new best friend. Vegetables that have been partially cooked and then frozen make great additions to soups. Wash and freeze ripening fruits and berries for smoothies and baked goods. Even leftover entrees can be placed in the freezer and reheated for a later meal.
Repurpose It: Don’t leave your leftovers to rot! Use the grilled chicken from last night’s dinner as a base for a taco salad, make sandwiches with remaining roasted turkey, or transform leftover rice into a sweet breakfast meal with fresh fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Donate It: Finally, for those foods that you simply cannot find any use for, consider donation. Although each facility’s guidelines may vary, many food banks will accept fresh produce, non-refrigerated items, and commercially packaged foods. Not only are you reducing waste, but you also feeding those in need! Find a food bank near you.

Who’s in the mood for a pear-fect fall treat? We all enjoy a treat now and then, so why not use this occasion to add some fruit to your day? Like Honey Green Tea Poached Pears. In this recipe, pears are infused with the earthy elements of green tea and the vibrant quality of ginger. Sweetened with fruit and a touch of honey, you can be happy in enjoying a treat that is just a tad sweet.
Feature these pears as an impressive finish to an evening meal or simply as a fruit boost to your morning oatmeal. For best results, select a firm variety of pear such as Anjou or Bosc, which holds its shape during the slow cooking process but still lends a smooth, buttery texture when eaten. Happy fruitful eats!
Honey Green Tea Poached Pears
Yield: Serves 4 (1 half each)
1 bottle Honest Honey Green Tea
1-inch piece fresh ginger, chopped
2 ripe pears, peeled, halved, and cored
1 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
Bring Honey Green Tea and ginger to a boil in a large, shallow pot. Reduce heat to a simmer and place pears cut-side down in liquid. Continue to simmer pears gently, occasionally spooning liquid over halves, for 15-20 minutes or until pears are tender. Allow to cool in liquid.
For an impressive dessert, serve pears with a drizzle of poaching liquid and a dollop of vanilla Greek yogurt on top.

You’ve heard of walking a mile in someone else’s shoes. What about walking a mile in someone else’s tires? That is the concept behind Indosole, an Indonesia-based company that transforms trashed tires into fashionable footwear. Indonesia faces a very unique environmental problem in that its landfills are overcrowded by motorcycle tires. To combat this problem, Indosole salvages discarded tires, sanitizes them, cuts them to size, and makes them into the soles of shoes. Without any melting down or off-gassing involved, the transformation is an environmentally friendly process that eliminates lots of waste, but also gives it new life.
Indosole uses locally-sourced materials to create a number of unique shoe designs, including a special edition pair inspired by Honest Tea!
